Named for the ancient sandy lake-bottom soils of the Mohawk Valley that give the site its well-drained, apple-friendly growing conditions. Today operates over 4,000 apple trees in 12 varieties including Honeycrisp and Pixie Crisp, plus u-pick blueberries, sunflower patches, and seasonal vegetables. A corn maze, hayrides with Mohawk Valley views, and farm animals make it a full agritourism destination. A state historic site preserving the most complete surviving section of the original Erie Canal in New York State, at the point where the canal crossed the Schoharie Creek via the longest aqueduct ever built on the Erie Canal. The 624-foot stone aqueduct ruins sit along a scenic 2.5-mile linear trail connecting Fort Hunter to Yankee Hill Lock, with interpretive signs explaining the canal's construction and operation. Open year-round for hiking, cycling, and fishing. Free admission. Visitor center open seasonally.
