37 farms in the Almanac raise turkeys. Most take orders now, and many sell out by late October.
If you want a farm-raised turkey for Thanksgiving, now is the time to order. Most farms raise a set number of birds, take deposits in September and October, and many sell out by the end of October.
A few things to ask when you call: what sizes they expect (farm turkeys vary more than store birds), whether the turkey will be fresh or frozen, when and where pickup is, and how much of a deposit they need.
Pasture-raised and heritage-breed turkeys cost more than supermarket birds, often much more, but many people find the flavor worth it.
Availability changes every year, so call or check each farm's website before counting on a bird.
