The Battenkill River in Washington County is widely regarded as one of the finest wild trout streams in the eastern United States — a clear, cold freestone river running through pastoral farmland and woodland from Vermont to the Hudson. Dozens of public fishing access points along the river are maintained by the DEC and Battenkill Conservancy. The river is open to non-motorized paddling with multiple launch points. The surrounding countryside features quiet country roads ideal for cycling. Free public access at all DEC-marked points year-round.
